About the Savannah Breed: The Savannah cat is a hybrid of the
African Serval, a wildcat which looks like a small cheetah with large ears and lives in the savannahs
of central Africa. The
first known Savannah was born in
1986, but the breed has only
taken off in recent years. It aims to combine the wild look of the Serval with the predictable behaviour
of a domestic. As a new hybrid cat derived from several existing breeds, I believe it is at a reduced risk of genetic health issues.
About Me: I first heard about Savannahs in a lecture given by geneticist Leslie Lyons just before I qualified as a veterinarian in 2007. I then spent a year working in a busy charity clinic before starting a PhD at the Royal Veterinary College. My career aim is to become a recognised specialist
in feline internal medicine and contribute to research which will help all cats live longer and healthier lives.
